MORE ABOUT VITAL SIGNS
Oxygen Saturation: Oxygen saturation refers to the amount of
oxygen being carried in the red blood cells, which load up with oxygen in the
lungs and then transport it to the rest of the body. People who have medical
conditions, such as lung disease, may not have enough oxygen in their red blood
cells. Oxygen saturation can be measured by a device called an oximeter. Oxygen
saturation of less than 90% is a sign that the lungs and heart are not working
well.
Blood Glucose Level: A blood glucose test measures the amount of a type of sugar, called glucose, in your blood. Glucose comes from carbohydrate foods. It is the main source of energy used by the body. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body's cells use the glucose. Insulin is produced in the pancreas and released into the blood when the amount of glucose in the blood rises. Blood glucose levels that remain high over time can damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. A "random" blood glucose test taken at any time. A normal blood glucose range is in the low to mid 100s. A diagnosis of diabetes is made if your blood glucose reading is 200 mg/dl or higher and you have symptoms of disease such as fatigue, excessive urination, excessive thirst or unplanned weight loss.
Temperature / Weight: Normal human body temperature is about 98.6F - but this can vary from person to person, and will also vary throughout the day, and depends on where the temperature is taken. For digital ear thermometers add 1/2 degree to reading. Significant weight gain or loss should be reported to your doctor. Heart Rate: Simply, how many times your heart beats per minute. The normal range for an adult HR is typically placed at 60-100 and can be further described as weak/strong and regular / irregular. Blood pressure: Blood pressure refers to the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels, and constitutes one of the principal vital signs. The pressure of the circulating blood decreases as blood moves through arteries, arterioles, capillaries, and veins; the term blood pressure generally refers to arterial pressure, i.e., the pressure in the larger arteries, the blood vessels that take blood away from the heart. Generally, a normal blood pressure reading is 120/80. Abnormal blood pressure reading should be reported to your doctor.
Neuro Signs: Do your pupils react appropriately to light? Equal in size? When a flashlight is shined into your eye does the pupil constrict quickly or sluggishly? Does the other pupil (the one not exposed to flashlight) also constrict (they both should)? The abbreviation PERL means Pupils Equal & Reactive to Light.
